Our STEAM camp at the Organic Farm School is created to inspire the next generation of scientists, environmentalists, and stewards of the earth.  Through a series of hands-on activities under the guidance of Biologist Andi Kopit, young explorers will delve into the captivating world of STEM through immersive experiences in soil science, insect ecology, and the intricate ecosystem of plants and animals that thrive on our farm. We’ll also have some fun farm craft end the week with a farm feast - a celebration of local food and a healthy environment!

Based on the luscious and vibrant farm property of the Organic Farm School, our camp offers a unique opportunity for our students to connect with nature while engaging in hands-on learning. During the week-long camp, students will:

  1. Learn about the farm ecosystem: explore the interconnectedness of living organisms on the farm and the delicate balance that maintains a healthy ecosystem.
  2. Roll up their sleeves and dive into the earth, learning about the composition of soil, its importance for plant growth, and the fascinating organisms that call it home.  How does healthy soil lead to healthy plants, animals and people?
  3. Discover the insects and native bees on the organic farm (Andi's field of expertise)  Why are bees and other insects important for happy farms and healthy ecosystems? OFS is working hard to support native pollinators so this is a great chance for children to see these efforts in action.
  4. Explore the habitat: Immerse themselves in the world of plants and animals, and discover the unique adaptations that enable them to thrive in this particular environment at the Organic Farm School and the PNW at large.
  5. Farm upcycling craft! OFS's Outreach Coordinator Kirsten Murray will offer a botanical dye workshop using flowers and plants from the farm.
  6. Interact with farmers and learn about regenerative agriculture practices.  Develop their critical thinking about the food distribution system, and the importance of stewarding the land and supporting local farms. Embrace their appreciation for our local farmers for providing healthy food for the community at the least environmental costs!
  7. Enjoy some delicious farm-fresh food, picked and prepped by themselves on the farm!

The camp is developed in partnership with the Organic Farm School, a Regenerative Learning Center based in South Whidbey offering community learning experiences and beginning farmer training tracks to cultivate healthier food systems via closer relationships between eaters and growers.  We are grateful for the Organic Farm School for this valuable collaboration opportunity to educate our local students!

Notes:

Students must have turned 9 by June 30, 2024.

Please let us know if you are interested but can only join for 4 days!

Fees include all learning materials, farm-fresh snacks (when available), and other learning materials and equipment, BUT do not cover lunch. Students are expected to bring their own lunch.
